Kiteboard St. Kitts - Wardrobe Malfunction Part 1
I think my videos are getting better personally. I'd like to move away from the gopro app though, use something that's as easy but with templates and music recognition to move from scene to scene during the beat. Oh, and it has to be on PC. I love my phone but these things are not made for video editing, no matter what anyone says.

This is part 1 of something that happened to me my last kite session over by the Marriott St. Kitts. Watch till the end. I'll post part 2 in the comments.

Found in St. Kitts
Was snooping around my area in St. Kitts with Christophe on Google maps and stumbled across this:

Make sure to view it in Satellite view. Took me a while to read it but made us laugh when I did.

A little bit of history - The Great Hurricane of 1780
Credit where credit is due, my mom sent this to me and finally got a chance to read it.

In the year of our Lord 1780, the Almighty reminded us of his power by sending a hurricane the likes that the Atlantic and Caribbean have never seen before in recorded memory.

Take this with a grain of salt because they didn't have the tools to measure these things like we do now, but the level of devastation, loss of life cannot and historically relevant impact this played on the world cannot be ignored. We'll get to the historical impact shortly, bear with me.

In 1780, a hurricane formed off the cost of Africa and tore towards across the Atlantic picking up a tremendous amount of strength before hitting, the eye of the storm barely missing Barbados. The level of destruction was unheard of at the time.

After dealing with Barbados, the storm continued to the southern Caribbean hitting St. Lucia, Martinique, Dominica, Guadaloupe, St. Kitts, Statia, Antigua and heading north to Florida, passing directly over Puerto Rico in the process. The eye hit Puerto Rico hard, very very hard. To the point of them naming the storm about 200 years before they started naming storms.

After Florida, it continued north and caused havoc in Canada, I kid you not.

From a Dutch sea-officer who was blown from statia to Martinique in the storm.
A short while ago it pleased the Lord Almighty to show us his power. Here we had from 12 to 22 October of this year a very fierce wind & a heavy see that ruined a lot of houses and warehouses, yes even many ships were wrecked and many people were killed. The wall has been completely washed away by the sea and the back of the house has been left only on single struts, yes it was so heavy that the sea flew over our house but we may thank the Lord for his mercy that we have come off so well.

From the attorney general of Guadeloupe
The gale of wind which happened on the 12th Oct. was the most severe perhaps ever known. Barbadoes suffered amazingly, 6500 souls perished. Tobago laid waste, Grenades, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Martinique, suffered more than any person can conceive. St. Kitts and Eustatia, did not escape without damage: this island did but just feel it.

This was a hell of a storm.

Apparently, estimates of the death toll from the hurricane range from 22,000 to about 28,500, making it the deadliest hurricane in the recorded history of the Atlantic hurricane basin.

Such a loss of life is incredible, but what about that historical impact I mentioned before? Well, 1780 was around America's war of independence from the British right? Historical records show that the British navy was moored all over the Caribbean preparing for the war, supplies, men, arms you name it. The fleet was crushed by the storm:

Among the ships lost from Rodney's fleet were the frigates HMS Phoenix, which was wrecked on the Cuban coast, and HMS Blanche, which disappeared without a trace. The sixth rate frigates HMS Andromeda and HMS Laurel were wrecked on Martinique with heavy loss of life. By far the worst losses in the British fleet, however, were under the command of Vice Admiral Peter Parker and Rear-Admiral Joshua Rowley. At the time of the hurricane, Rowley was off the coast of New York with a portion of the fleet, including HMS Sandwich, while Parker was in Port Royal, Jamaica. Many of their ships, however, were in the hurricane's path. HMS Thunderer, HMS Stirling Castle, HMS Scarborough, HMS Barbados, HMS Deal Castle, HMS Victor, and HMS Endeavour were lost, among others, and almost all of their crews died. Seven other ships were dismasted.

In a sense, you could say that America was able to fight back the British because they didn't receive the supplies and reinforcements that they were meant to get because everything was destroyed in the Caribbean. Basically, America is a sovereign nation now due to this massive hurricane.

The more you know.

Buying a vehicle in St. Kitts
As you'd probably guess, buying a vehicle is expensive. Now imagine having to do it on an island where the shipping is an additional 4000 - 10000US and then the government hits you with environment/wheel tax, duty and VAT on top of the price of the car + shipping. It's a crazy expensive process here.

Generally for second hand vehicles, cars that you wouldn't look at in North America end up costing thousands of dollars here because of all the additional charges.

Enter companies like japanesevehicles.com and beforward.jp. They sell second hand vehicles in Japan, China, Thailand, Indonesia and Dubai to western markets, specifically central america and the caribbean I think. Their prices are more reasonable, but you're still hit by the government when it comes in and the vehicle will generally end up costing twice as much as what you bought it for.

The whole thing is a scam and is quite infuriating, but I thought you'd get a kick out of the Japan part Andy.

Alex's moving back to montreal
So with everything that's happened here in St. Kitts, the fights with my family, the work, the moving 6 times in 3 months, and most recently the trip to montreal where Vikie and i broke up and will be going back to Montreal in 6 days. I've decided that enough is enough.

St. Kitts now looks to me like it did when I was in highschool: dull, bland and i have this need to get away from here.

Everything I did in St. Kitts went wrong. Everything i did with Vikie in St. Kitts went wrong. It's time for me to leave.

I'm coming back to Montreal with little money, and a plan of what I'm going to do but no real means of how I'm going to do it.

JS, I do apologize, I know you wanted to come to st kitts and it would of been great having you here man, but trust me, you wouldn't of been happy with the trip. On top of that I would of wanted you staying with me and there's just no space for you in the condo/villa where i am now. with just Vikie and I we were living on top of each other. It wouldn't of been a happy experience.

at any rate, i'm still deciding the final day of departure, but it'll be in june.

It's hard having to sell all of my shit that i tried to carry across the world. gotta do what you gotta do...

I mentioned I may need help. I'll explain that a little later.

Alex's new office work horse
Since I came to St. Kitts I've been using my macbook pro as my main machine. That ended today.

imac arrives

Came in from Miami, I heard something rattling around inside so was quite concerned.

imac unboxed

Finally got the ugly brown shipping box off.

imac next to my macbook pro

It arrived at the best time too, my office was just finished and I had started putting my desk together, it's a nice big L shaped glass desk.

imac vs macbook pro screen comparison

It's stunning when turned on or off. Quite frankly I never thought I'd buy another imac since their just so constrained, but with space for 8 to 16 gigs of ram and an i5 2.5 quad core cpu in here, I'm very happy.

It also has Lion on it, which I'll write a mini review about later.

St. Kitts Minor storm
Been here less than a week and already we have our first minor storm. As i write this there's flashes of lightning and booms of thunder right above me. Deluge of rain and gust of wind that carry it sideways.
Vikie is worried, I think it's her first storm, Castro seems nervous a bit too. He's never really like thunder.

Here's what we're in for tonight :D

St. Kitts Storm

Phew, made it
I don't think the trip to and from Europe was that stressful. but we're in St. Kitts, Castro is here with us, and we're in good spirits. The island is lush and green, much more so than when I left. Sunny and warm too.

I've got a ton of work to do so I'll post more later.
