PicoLoader and SD2DP2 mod for gamecube
Just got this on aliexpress and it cost less that what is described in the video, mine was 14 bucks. Believe it or not there are still some gamecube games I'd love to play and this might be the easiest way to do that.
World's smallest Gamecube - The GameCube Nano
This is pretty cool. Someone cut up the wii's Gamecube mobo to its bare minimum to function correctly, added 2 or 3 microboard and housed it in an adorable mini gamecube case. I have a GC and would be very willing to get a micro console like this. I've been thinking about modding my current gamecube to red sd cards instead of discs since the optical drive will eventually die. This channel deals with retro console mods. It's done pretty well and can has given step by step instructions for different mods.
MegaDrive for gamecube
Not exactly what you're thinking, this is a addon to hard mode a gamecube. Something I haven't really thought about until recently. The only problem is I have a brand new second hand gamecube that I'm not sure I want to gut just yet.
Old consoles on HD Tv
So I was going through some of my stuff over the weekend and decided to try out my N64 and see if I could get it working on my 60" Sony Bravia. Luckily, the SNES, N64 and Gamecube all come with RF and RCA adapters and even more lucky for me, the TV supports both. 1st problem was that the adapters I have were so bloody old and worn out that they didn't work right off the bat. Luckily I had a couple extra ones lying around and even a brand new SNES who's wires I could of used. The N64 took some cajoling but I finally got some games to work. Nothing like Donkey Kong 64 in all it's pixelated glory on a 60" TV blown up to whatever RCA's maximum output is. Solution to the problem is that I got me one of these for 20$ ![]() Transfer video and sound through to an hdmi connection and will even upscale it to 720 or 1080! 2nd problem I encountered was with my gamecube, the disc drive doesn't want to read. So I checked on ebay again and found a platinum Gamecube with 2 remotes, all the cables and a memory card for 60$. Awesome. Looking forward to playing fzero gx on my tv in almost full hd glory!
History of the Nintendo Gamecube
As far as consoles go, the Nintendo Gamecube is one of the most underrated consoles ever. It was a marred development from the very beginning because of the Nintendo64 and the partnerships Nintendo had formed during that era in the console wars. On top of that, Nintendo had a very hard time shaking its 'kiddie' image because of how the powers that be at Nintendo considered their company. Nintendo always considered themselves a toy company, not an electronics or even a media company like Sony and even Microsoft did during that same era. The Gamecube was my favourite console, even more so than the SNES because it innovated on so many levels, in both hardware and the software that was released. But as I mentioned before, the console had a lot of issues even before it was released. A lot of issues. I've had this website open in my browser for the longest while. It has a rundown of the Gamecube's history from when it was a twinkle in the engineers' eyes up until it was officially discontinued years later. If you're a console fan like me, and love the background stories behind major events then this is definitely worth a read. I find a some things in particular very interesting, like the fact that Nintendo had plans to go with the same company that developed the Nintendo64 hardware but after that company was mismanaged to hell and the original staff left to form another company, Nintendo decided to go with the new company and was sued by the old company to try and stop the process. There's a lot about the PR problems Nintendo had too. They just couldn't shake the kiddie image, even when they produced games like Eternal Darkness. This influenced the price cuts and the lack of third party software and support. Anyway, really a very interesting read, so check out A Dolphin’s Tale: The Story of GameCube.
Getting gamecube games working on a wii
I need to decide if I want to do this or not. I have a feeling it's the only way I'm going to get to play Starfox for the Gamecube.
Nintendo Direct Announcements - Zelda and Monolith stuff mainly
Nintendo made some pretty large announcements yesterday, showing off certain games and promising more to come with playable version during this years E3. Here's the full Nintendo Direct, if you don't want to sit through the entire thing, I go through the interesting points below. Let's start with Mario and Mario Kart. Nintendo said that up intil now there has been a release of both game for their recent consoles and handhelds since the GBA days and they promise to keep up that trend with the Wii U. The same team behind Galaxy are going to be behind the new Mario (not sure if that's a good thing as I like Sunshine better). No video or images provided. Also promised a Super Smash Brothers game, though this would be co-created with Namco-Bandai and would possibly be influenced by the Tekken franchise. 3DS would be integral to this game, which reminds me of the old Gamecube Gameboy Advance hookups... Next, Yoshi's reentry into the gaming space. I found a video of someone dissecting the entire video of Yoshi's game. Yarn Yoshi takes elements of yoshi's island (super mario world 2 which was a FANTASTIC game), Yoshi's story (N64 game, somewhat childish but still fun) and Kirby's Epic Yarn. Big announcement about Monolith Soft. the game is not called Xenoblade 2 but rather Monolith's current project. At any rate, a Xenoblade 2 would be a welcome addition as Xenoblade 1 is absolutely fantastic. Loving every minute of it. Here's a rundown of the trailer by the same people. Iwata also mentioned a new Zelda and takingthe series back to the basics. Meaning in recent Zeldas the games have been somewhat linear, forcing the player to go to one castle after another. The original Zelda wasn't like this at all. If you could get into the castle, you could try and finish it. It's a long development time though, so in the mean time Aonuma is going to re-release Wind Waker with HD graphics and some new quests. The game looks phenomenal. Here's the introduction of both Zelda news. And now some stills. ![]() ![]() Finally, I wanted to show something. It shows the dedication of Nintendo to release top quality products. There's an Wii emulator for Pc that will upscale wii and gamecube games to 1080p. Why would you want to do that? Well, the emulator, Dolphin as it's called, not only up-scales, but can change textures and even add anti-aliasing. Now I bring this up after Zelda because there was some noise about how Skyward Sword looks on this emulator. The following three videos show off what the original game looked like and what the up-scaled versions look like. We'll go by release date, so Wind Waker first. Make sure you go to at least 720p to get the full effect. Now Twilight Princess. And finally, Skyward Sword. So, with all this, Nintendo clearly could of just up-scaled and re-released, but they decided to retexture and update the lighting and add more quests. Well done Nintendo, well done. |
