The Watchmen

The WatchmenI finished reading watchmen a little while ago. Good comic/book but i don't think it lives up to the hype surrounding it. i mean, i just don't understand why people would think it's fantastic.

Maybe I've been hanging out with Christophe too much, he does think either something is amazing or should die, and he said that the story was amazing.
it was just too convoluted for me, not to say i like things straight forward, but certain things could of been kept out, like this.

the pirate story is totally unnecessary. and i found myself skipping most of it because i was more interested in the actual storyline of the comic. and i know that it does have something to do with the story but my point is that if they skipped it completely it wouldn't of changed anything.
hell, the story about the news stand guy was more interesting.

Another problem is that people said how great Rorschach is when i don't see what the big deal about him is, especially his part of the ending. i know a lot of other superheroes or 'masks' that act the same as him but are much cooler, costume, personality and power wise.

really, the only thing i want to see in the movie is the ending. just curious as to the scale the film will take it. oh and it will be interesting to see how true to the comic the movie will be.

so, recap. i liked watchmen, just think it's like halo, far too much hype for it's on good.

That's too bad. I suppose I was lucky having read it before I heard any hype whatsoever. All my hype is entirely self-generated. I do agree about the Rorschach thing entirely though. I imagine he's like Wolverine in that regard. Popular because he's "badass", outside of the context of the story. I actually found Nite Owl, the Comedian, and Dr Manhattan to be more interesting.

As for the pirate story, I quite enjoyed it and felt it belonged quite well as an allegory for what was going on in the story as well as the cold war themes.

I also really liked the story because it's totally not your usual superhero story. It might be fairly typical of a drama, but it's not what you usually find in comic books. Or at least, not quite what you USED to find in comic books. A lot of stuff has copied it since, so I suppose that dulls it's impact somewhat.

rorshach is an amazing character due to his amazing sense of justice and his refusal to ever compromise when it comes to doing the right thing. thats why he told jon to kill him in the end and thats also why the "eutopia" that he and ozymandias were trying to create was never one that rorshach could have lived in... he couldnt live with himself if the peace that was made was begotten from such an evil act... even if it is for the "greater good"
