PicoLoader and SD2DP2 mod for gamecube
Just got this on aliexpress and it cost less that what is described in the video, mine was 14 bucks. Believe it or not there are still some gamecube games I'd love to play and this might be the easiest way to do that.
Modding the Wii U
One of the things I'd always wanted to do with my Wii U was to mod it. I even bought the ds games that were supposed to help with breaking open the os before they shut down the store. I just never got around to it. Things have changed drastically since then and I think this might be even easier now with way more to do including getting the wii u online services running again. I'm just waiting on a power cable to see if that's what the problem with my wii u is. The cable I have seems to have some fraying on it so I'm hoping a simple replacement will get the thing working again.
Games to Play: Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight Silksong
I just posted this in the chat and then did a search and realized I never posted anything about this. This is one of my favorite games. It's a metroidvania with "hand drawn" graphics in a darksouls shell. The lore is amazing, the gameplay is great, the music is phenomenal. An absolute gem of a game. If you like Metroidvanias and haven't tried this one yet, go get it on your system of preference. It's pretty much on everything at this point. Then Team Cherry announced a direct sequel to Hollow Knight. I was worried that it would suffer from sequelitis and at first it did. It's slow and difficult to get into but it hit me yesterday that I was prefering Hollow Knight because my last memory of that game was me being decked out in all the best stuff so this one felt clunky. Honestly, the lore is starting to grow on me. I've gotten to the point that I feel more agile in the game because of the upgrades I've achieved and found and the boss fights are tough but engaging. Funny thing is, apparently people complained that the game was too difficult so Team Cherry released a patch to make the game easier. Supposedly, when certain things hit you, taken off two hearts instead of one is too difficult for people. I've refused to download the patch, and sure there are times when I think the game is being cheap or ridiculous, but I keep at it and when I beat those bosses it just makes the victory that much more worth it. Seriously, go get these games. Hollow Knight is selling for 15$ on steam and Silkson for 20$. I got Hollow knight on steam but decided to go switch for silksong. No regrets, I played it for hours on the flight across the Atlantic.
Wii U gamepad screen dying
Before I left St. Kitts for the holidays, I started setting up my space downstairs as a sort of games room with all my consoles. Ideally, it'll be set up upstairs in what could be considered the house's attic, but that will take much much more work - ventilation, electrical, space and finally figuring out how to get up and down easy enough that it makes it usable. Right now the downstairs set up doesn't make much sense in case Ale needs help with anything. Anyway, I set up a cuby system for the different consoles and plugged in my wii u for the first time in like 3 years and the gamepad screen has got fog in it as if one layer is peeling from another. Saddened me tremendously cause it's on of my favorite and underappreciated consoles. Online you can find the game pad selling for like 130us or you can buy the parts for about 40us. Throw in a new battery for another 15us and you pratically have a new gamepad. Especially since mine is the "special edition" zelda wind waker edition. It might seem silly, but I'd rather not lose the glyphs on the gamepad. I found these parts on iFixit: Gamepad screen and Gamepad LCD. I'm pretty tech savy but what is the difference here? Plus the Wii u gamepad iFixit guide for replacing the screen I think I'll tackle it. Of interest, these can all be found on amazon for the same or similar prices.
The Duskbloods - Game trailer Nintendo Switch 2
Anyone like the Bloodborne or Souls games? Seems to be in that vain, and Nintendo exclusive to boot.
Games to play: Metroid Dread
I've been meaning to buy this for quite some time, and I finally got it right before I left italy. Played it the entire flight back to St. Kitts. It's fantastic, and I've been trying to figure out why it's so good aside from it being a really pretty and well put together Metroidvania. I love a good metroidvania... The main thing is you have these E.M.M. I. things that will hunt down Samus and kill you in one shot. It's very nerve racking at first because all you can do in the beginning is just run from them. Eventually you get power and weapons that help you hide from them and then take them on and luckily the bloody things are stuck to specific rooms or zones in each area of the map. I've been trying to think of why this feels familiar and it finally clicked. It's basically a simplistic version of Alien: Isolation. The core of Metroid's gameplay isn't the same as Alien Isolation though. It's not just about ruinning and hiding. The core is still a metroidvania, explore, get new abilities to open new areas, fight bosses, rinse and repeat. What sets Metroid apart from Alien in these little sequences though is there's an action button you can hit to get out of the single hit death mechanic, but has to be hit at the exact right time and there's no real indicator when that is (that I've figured out) and the timing is random. Could be a second, could be 5, entirely random. This adds a bit of diversity to the encounter that I think is absolutely brilliant.
Visions of Mana Game release date trailer
I've been a huge mana fan since accidentally stumbling on it with the original for the SNES. I loved the world building, the music and the aesthetics of the game and then with the multitap (i think it was called) you could play 3 people together, which was unheard of for a console of the time. Years later, I went down a rabbit hole looking into the development of the game and found out that despite the game being huge in scope and length, loads of enemies to fight (clever programming to get around limitations) and use of a larger cartridge memory chip, 16 megabits, what was the official release was actually a stripped down version of the final product. Originally, the game was supposed to be on the SNES CD with 650 mbs instead of the 16 we got. They basically stripped more than 60% of the game to fit it on the cartridge. I lost track of the series after a while, since I didn't have a playstation and so couldn't play the subsequent games. I'm happy that they're bringing back the series after its hiatus but saddened to see no switch port at all. I guess I'll have to get it for steam.
Things to do on the WiiU in 2024
Love Modern Vintage Gamer, has to be one of the most interesting and well put together video game channels that is entirely unique content. Not sure if I've mentioned him before but his channel is about retro games, modding consoles, the emulator scene and loads of other things, but from a very technical stand point. He's pretty much single handedly bringing attention to bring life back to dead consoles scene and it's really well done. This particular video is for me really since I'm one of the few people I know with a WiiU, but he has plenty of other content that might interest people. The Wii U was a system that Nintendo would rather forget. But for modders, it's nearly the perfect console which can play the (almost) entire back catalog of Nintendo games that game before it - and many other emulators and homebrew. While modding the Wii U isn't anything new - in today's video we take a look at the most up to date homebrew environment known as Aroma that not only makes the Wii U easier to hack, but it also makes it the experience so much better. Let's check it out. ? Up to date Wii U hacking guide : https://wiiu.hacks.guide/ ? Aroma Download - https://aroma.foryour.cafe/ Will definitely need to try and do this with mine. I loved the WiiU, thought it was entirely underrated. I'm on to the Switch now but would love to bring some life back into it.
FPGA Nintendo 64 gaming
I'm almost tempted to get one of these. I already have a rom cart for the N64 but playing it on a modern screen is becoming a problem. These devices would solve this problem. FPGA is basically fitting the entire mobo of the N64 on a single chip. Essentially turning these modern machines, which can output 4k resolution, connect to wifi and bluetooth, can play Nintendo 64 games natively meaning no emulation. It's actually really impressive. Here's Modern Vintage Gamer with more details
What games do you have for your nintendo Switch?
Looking to buy some new games while my parents are in the States. I was thinking of getting the following:
I'm always looking for a bargain though, so if you know of anything on sale that's worth picking up, let me know.
Perfect Dark PC "Port"
Apparently, someone is porting perfect dark to PC. You need a rom of the original n64 game to get this running. There's even a mod using z64 or whatever to play the rom with a mouse and keyboard. Completely changes the game.
Mixing Zelda Ocarina of time with Studio Ghibli
I would watch the shit out of this. All in Unreal engine 5. Apparently, this youtuber has been making zelda fan stuff in unreal forever.
LUNARK - pixel platformer that is quite stunning to watch
Holy cow this looks amazing. Rotoscoping for the win.
Nintendo kind of announces Nintendo Switch 2 at Financial call
This is so typical. I held off as long as I could on buying a Switch because there was always rumors of a Switch Pro model just on the horizon. Kind of like the DS, DSi, 2 and 3DS XL models inevitably being released. And the jump from standard to XL was always such a huge leap in both processing power as well as screen space that it just made sense to either upgrade if you already owned an original or wait until the XL came out. I got a switch because I wanted to play Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, it was a must buy for me. I'd waited long enough and Nintendo kind of seemed like they gave up on the idea of a Switch Pro. I finally got it in my hands and then 2 weeks later Nintendo announces they're working on a successor. I'm not surprised by this, not at all, but damn man, I was expecting a bit of a delay. I guess I just took too long to get a Switch. Anyway, the question of backwards compatibility now arises. Nintendo hasn't made any official statement other than, we have "no comment". So leave it to MVG (Modern Vintage Gaming) to take a dive into it. If you have never heard of this guy, he's great. Has a history of programming and specifically takes deep dives into emulation. Pretty intense stuff and pretty interesting. |
