Hockey Talk: Luongo

at 16:56 - 13th, September 2010
Luongo angers me.

I think he's overrated as a goalie and his fans aggravate me. every time he touches the puck they start screaming "LOU". it's retarded.

and then they made him captain and things got worse.
a goalie has no right to be captain. every time he wants the officials attention they either have to skate to him or he has to skate to them. not out of the ordinary unless said official is in the opposite side of the rink. just a waste of time in my opinion.

anyway, he's "stepping down". at least that's what the Montreal Gazette is saying.

VANCOUVER - St. Léonard native Roberto Luongo stepped down on Monday as captain of the Vancouver Canucks after two years in the job.

The veteran goaltender, a member of Canada's 2010 Olympic gold-medal hockey team, offered no reason for the move, but said he would continue to work for the Canucks' goal of winning the Stanley Cup.

"I am honoured to have served as captain of the Vancouver Canucks for the past two seasons," the 31-year-old said in a statement.

"Being captain in a Canadian city for a team with such passionate fans is a privilege and an experience I will always take pride in.

"I will continue to be a leader on this team and support my teammates the same way I always have while focusing on our ultimate goal."

The Canucks said they would announce their new "leadership group" before the beginning of the regular season.

"Roberto has been an excellent captain for our team the past two seasons," said general manager Mike Gillis.

"We respect and support his decision to relinquish the captaincy and are confident that he will continue to help lead our team through his tremendous character and work ethic on and off the ice."

would anybody be willing to have a hockey night during the season? i have a 60" HD tv that will be playing the games every game.

Most overrated goalie in the League. Wonkiest gold medal winning goalie ever...
Yea he's stepping down.

The man can't take pressure too well.

Bill Durnan lost his captaincy because he pissed off the refs too much XD

Blah blah blah blah Pierre McGuire is such a tool. He contradicts himself week to week so many times it's not even funny anymore (just annoying). And I totally know why this guy can't get a job as a GM. He's bitching about the Jaro trade again. He thinks it's so easy to score trades like "Jaro for TJ Oshie" which is HILARIOUS and no way in the hell would the Blues do that trade (would have had to given more, and probably a pick, definitely a top prospect). The Blues could have gotten Jaro for free if they wanted to. They didn't need to lose their two top prospects for a goalie (even though he's way better than Chris Mason, he's still a question mark regardless of what happened last Spring), especially when they could have gotten any other goalie for probably cheaper with more experience (and Western experience, since there were a lot of them on the move). Only way McGuire gets to be a GM is on NHL11.

Speaking of captains, I think Gio's going to be our new captain. I would also give Gomez or Gorges a fair shake at the C. (I would give it to Gorges if it were me). But Gio seems to glue them all together. I think Gill and Markov surely get an A. Cammy and Plekanec don't really need a letter to personify their leadership.

The media fretting about it is hilarious though. "The players should pick" well...not really, and anyway these guys when you ask them they say whoever gets picked is the one they'd picked. Besides, it's a tight group in there. The letter just gives the guy the right to officially speak to the refs. "Gorges is too young" well...Crosby, Lecavalier, Toews, Richards, Nash, Brown aren't and weren't exactly grizzled veterans when they were given their letter.

gio is a good pick. markov i'm not so sure about. i think i just have a general problem with markov though.

gomez, pleks, cami, gill would make great assistants.

i can't wait to start hearing the crowd yell about gio not speaking 100% perfect english though.

You mean French?
But in Gio's case, it would be like water off a duck's back. The man is unflappable.

i mean for everything koivu did for this city, they just couldn't get over the fact the captain didn't speak french
