Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

at 14:05 - 16th, June 2009
Wow, both vikie and i were blown away by this.
We bought the wiiware version of this game and when in the middle of the process you get a message from squenix saying that the game is pay to play online. so i thought that it was like final fantasy y life as king, download extra content as in costumes and skins. figuring maybe they would allow you to buy new weapons and characters, you knw, the typical thing that a lot of companies are doing now.

nope. 5 hours in and vikie's beaten it already. apparently what they don't mention is that it's an episodic game, meaning you get the first 3 'chapters' of the game and when finished those you can decide to download the rest in individual chapters for 3$US. only one other chapter is out right now.

here's a list of chapters and release dates as well as prices
Tale Title Chapter Number Wii Points Required North American Release Date
Return of the Moon1 1 800 June 1, 2009
The Last of the Red Wings1 2 02 June 1, 2009
Return of the Dragoon1 3 02 June 1, 2009
Rydia's Tale 4 300 June 1, 2009
Yang's Tale 5 300 July 6, 2009
Palom's Tale 6 300 July 6, 2009
Edge's Tale 7 300 July 6, 2009
Porom's Tale 8 300 August 3, 2009
Edward's Tale 9 300 August 3, 2009
The Lunarian's Tale 10 300 August 3, 2009
The Crystals 11 800 September 7, 2009

after some math and from what other people have said, the game should come up to roughly 36$, not so bad considering people online are saying it's a full fledged game and when the original came out for snes back in the day it went for 60$. and your characters/equipment/items/stats and everything else gets moved over to the next chapter when ready.

initially i was upset, when i buy something i expect to get the whole thing, especially when it's a game. i hate DLC, especially when it's already on disc and you unlock it by paying 3 bucks.
now that i think of it, there might be technical reasons for this as well. maybe the game is larger than 45 megs, which is the limit for wiiware.

so final words, be weary of what you're buying. i didn't know, and when i think of it i'm not sure i would of bought this knowing it was episodic, sneaky buggers.

Actually, this was never on the SNES, but it's a sequel to FFIV (or FFII in the US) which was on the SNES. This game was originally released on mobile phones, actually. I don't mind that it's episodic, really. If anything, it saves me money cause I only need to buy the next bit when I'm done with what I have.

Yeah, that bit wasn't as clear. I guess they should've called it Final Fantasy IV: The After Years: The First Couple of Episodes: Episode 1 and 2: The Beginning ;)
