Volcanic Eruptions

at 0:18 - 20th, March 2009
when i was but a lad growing up on the tropical island of st kitts, another island called monsterrat which had a volcano that was spewing ash into the air like there was no tomorrow. now, not crazy mount ste helen type of explosion but more like venting ash to the point where one night my friend bob and i were going bar hopping and it was almost like it was snowing. almost but not quite. normally you can't see monsterrat from st kitts, too far, but there was usually a nice thin layer of ash on everything and this night we had trouble walking because the ash was stinging our eyes, but there was never a large explosion.

anyway, one day i was sitting in class in 5th form a couple of months after this bar hopping night we looked outside and there was this gigantic column of rock looking smoke going as high into the sky as the eye could see. wish i had a camera, but alas no pictures were taken.

the reason i bring this up? well, because of this.

NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga - Scientists sailed Thursday to inspect an undersea volcano that has been erupting for days near Tonga — shooting smoke, steam and ash thousands of feet into the sky above the South Pacific ocean.

Authorities said Thursday the eruption does not pose any danger to islanders at this stage, and there have been no reports of fish or other animals being affected.

Spectacular columns are spewing out of the sea about 6 miles from the southwest coast off the main island of Tongatapu — an area where up to 36 undersea volcanoes are clustered, geologists said.

just made me think of monsterrat and that day back in school.

Question is, what age did you start bar hopping at? I'm hoping 5th form wasn't grade 5 in Canada terms.

no no, fifth form was grade 11. but i started bar hoping when i was 15. don't forget that st kitts was really small, so not many places for 2 white guys to go bar hoping. one of the places was a resto-bar that rented the building from my dad. never got hammered there though. most beach bars on these small islands have a minimum age for drinking, it's as long as you have money.
