Games to Play: Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight Silksong
I just posted this in the chat and then did a search and realized I never posted anything about this.

This is one of my favorite games. It's a metroidvania with "hand drawn" graphics in a darksouls shell. The lore is amazing, the gameplay is great, the music is phenomenal. An absolute gem of a game.
If you like Metroidvanias and haven't tried this one yet, go get it on your system of preference. It's pretty much on everything at this point.

Then Team Cherry announced a direct sequel to Hollow Knight. I was worried that it would suffer from sequelitis and at first it did. It's slow and difficult to get into but it hit me yesterday that I was prefering Hollow Knight because my last memory of that game was me being decked out in all the best stuff so this one felt clunky.

Honestly, the lore is starting to grow on me. I've gotten to the point that I feel more agile in the game because of the upgrades I've achieved and found and the boss fights are tough but engaging.

Funny thing is, apparently people complained that the game was too difficult so Team Cherry released a patch to make the game easier. Supposedly, when certain things hit you, taken off two hearts instead of one is too difficult for people.
I've refused to download the patch, and sure there are times when I think the game is being cheap or ridiculous, but I keep at it and when I beat those bosses it just makes the victory that much more worth it.

Seriously, go get these games. Hollow Knight is selling for 15$ on steam and Silkson for 20$. I got Hollow knight on steam but decided to go switch for silksong. No regrets, I played it for hours on the flight across the Atlantic.

Games to play: Metroid Dread
I've been meaning to buy this for quite some time, and I finally got it right before I left italy. Played it the entire flight back to St. Kitts.

It's fantastic, and I've been trying to figure out why it's so good aside from it being a really pretty and well put together Metroidvania. I love a good metroidvania...

The main thing is you have these E.M.M. I. things that will hunt down Samus and kill you in one shot. It's very nerve racking at first because all you can do in the beginning is just run from them. Eventually you get power and weapons that help you hide from them and then take them on and luckily the bloody things are stuck to specific rooms or zones in each area of the map.

I've been trying to think of why this feels familiar and it finally clicked. It's basically a simplistic version of Alien: Isolation. The core of Metroid's gameplay isn't the same as Alien Isolation though. It's not just about ruinning and hiding. The core is still a metroidvania, explore, get new abilities to open new areas, fight bosses, rinse and repeat.

What sets Metroid apart from Alien in these little sequences though is there's an action button you can hit to get out of the single hit death mechanic, but has to be hit at the exact right time and there's no real indicator when that is (that I've figured out) and the timing is random. Could be a second, could be 5, entirely random. This adds a bit of diversity to the encounter that I think is absolutely brilliant.

Games to play: Rainworld
I just picked this up on steam for like 8US but wish I could of found it on switch. Seems like a much better fit for the game.

Things to do on the WiiU in 2024
Love Modern Vintage Gamer, has to be one of the most interesting and well put together video game channels that is entirely unique content. Not sure if I've mentioned him before but his channel is about retro games, modding consoles, the emulator scene and loads of other things, but from a very technical stand point.

He's pretty much single handedly bringing attention to bring life back to dead consoles scene and it's really well done.

This particular video is for me really since I'm one of the few people I know with a WiiU, but he has plenty of other content that might interest people.

The Wii U was a system that Nintendo would rather forget. But for modders, it's nearly the perfect console which can play the (almost) entire back catalog of Nintendo games that game before it - and many other emulators and homebrew. While modding the Wii U isn't anything new - in today's video we take a look at the most up to date homebrew environment known as Aroma that not only makes the Wii U easier to hack, but it also makes it the experience so much better. Let's check it out.

? Aroma Download - https://aroma.foryour.cafe/

Will definitely need to try and do this with mine. I loved the WiiU, thought it was entirely underrated. I'm on to the Switch now but would love to bring some life back into it.

What games do you have for your nintendo Switch?
Looking to buy some new games while my parents are in the States.
I was thinking of getting the following:

  • Tactics Ogre Reborn

  • Metroid Dread

  • Mario on drugs

  • Collection of Mana

  • Deadcells

  • Pikmin 4

I'm always looking for a bargain though, so if you know of anything on sale that's worth picking up, let me know.

Nintendo kind of announces Nintendo Switch 2 at Financial call
This is so typical. I held off as long as I could on buying a Switch because there was always rumors of a Switch Pro model just on the horizon. Kind of like the DS, DSi, 2 and 3DS XL models inevitably being released. And the jump from standard to XL was always such a huge leap in both processing power as well as screen space that it just made sense to either upgrade if you already owned an original or wait until the XL came out.

I got a switch because I wanted to play Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, it was a must buy for me. I'd waited long enough and Nintendo kind of seemed like they gave up on the idea of a Switch Pro.

I finally got it in my hands and then 2 weeks later Nintendo announces they're working on a successor. I'm not surprised by this, not at all, but damn man, I was expecting a bit of a delay. I guess I just took too long to get a Switch.

Anyway, the question of backwards compatibility now arises. Nintendo hasn't made any official statement other than, we have "no comment". So leave it to MVG (Modern Vintage Gaming) to take a dive into it. If you have never heard of this guy, he's great. Has a history of programming and specifically takes deep dives into emulation. Pretty intense stuff and pretty interesting.

"New" Sonic the Hedgehog game - Sonic Superstars
Is this a new game or a remastering or remake of one of the originals?

I have to admit, the sprite animation in the trailer does look enticing.

Several games removed from Apple Arcade
Apple has a platform known as Apple Arcade which is very similar to the Microsoft Game Pass, Sony's Playstation Plus and Nintendo's Switch Online platforms. Hell, even Google has Play Pass.

Games as a service are here. You don't technically own anything anymore. You simply rent it for a period of time and play it while it's made available to you.

Thanks Steam for bringing us down this road. Originally, I was against the idea of what Steam was, but never thought it would get this bad.

So Apple had a bunch of games that were on this rental service and now they're removing these 15:

  • Atone: Heart of the Elder Tree

  • BattleSky Brigade: Harpooner

  • Cardpocalypse

  • Dead End Job

  • Don't Bug Me!

  • Dread Nautical

  • EarthNight

  • Explottens

  • Lifeslide

  • Over the Alps

  • Projection: First Light

  • Spelldrifter

  • Spidersaurs

  • Towaga: Among Shadows

  • Various Daylife

The agreement between the devs and Apple was that for a period of time those games would be on the arcade and they would be available to be played for anyone subscribing to the service. The terms are now up and people who play those games will eventually - 2 weeks? be met with a message saying no longer available. The dev can decide if they want to put the game for sale for full purchase on the store after that. People who had the game through the service will need to buy the game to continue playing it.

This raises all sorts of questions regarding ownership and preservation and the like. It still boggles my mind that people are willing to do it this way.

Cult of the Lamb
This is being touted as Animal Crossing with weapons and blood. I have to admit, it sounds relatively interesting.

Maybe a cross between animal crossing for the city building and citizen animal folk managing but with the fighting of binding of isaac.

Going to be out for pretty much everything it looks like.

Good lord, seems like Nintendo had a busy Nintendo Direct recently.

Check this out. Love the art style. Haven't played a tactics game in quite some time.

Just beat Cat quest
I'm going through my steam library trying to clear it out and have been going through games 1 by 1 when I'm not playing TitanFall 2 (Go pick up titanfall 2 if anything for the single player though the multiplayer is awesome as well).

I picked up Cat Quest a while ago and started playing it yesterday. If you look at the steam page, there are tons of reviews on how great it is. It's aesthetically pleasing for the most part with cute graphics. It's part metroidvania and part souls game.

I had to turn off the music after about an hour though as there seem to only be 3 or 4 songs, each playing on a loop when certain things happen.
It can be a relatively short game too, since I was doing the mini quests and after my 10th or so I realized that the entire game was a fetch quest.

  • Go here

  • get this thing

  • oh shit someone stole it

  • chase them to another location and kill them

  • Or someone is missing

  • go there to find them

  • oh shit it's monsters

  • kill them quick

  • now head back to town

Seriously, even the main missions are like that.

I had to force myself to finish it, and only because the main quest is so short I figured I might as well.

The AI for the monsters varies depending on the mob, but all in all pretty pattern based and pretty simple to figure out.

I've uninstalled it, not planning on playing it again, but I could suggest it if you have an afternoon to burn and it's on super sale for a couple bucks.

Windbound Game trailer
Anyone have a switch? Anyone with a switch looking for a Zelda Breath of the Wild type game?

This to me feels very much like Breath of the wild, I just don't think it will incorporate all the depth in the lore that Zelda offered. Almost feels like it might even be the same engine.
