Games to Play: Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight Silksong
I just posted this in the chat and then did a search and realized I never posted anything about this.

This is one of my favorite games. It's a metroidvania with "hand drawn" graphics in a darksouls shell. The lore is amazing, the gameplay is great, the music is phenomenal. An absolute gem of a game.
If you like Metroidvanias and haven't tried this one yet, go get it on your system of preference. It's pretty much on everything at this point.

Then Team Cherry announced a direct sequel to Hollow Knight. I was worried that it would suffer from sequelitis and at first it did. It's slow and difficult to get into but it hit me yesterday that I was prefering Hollow Knight because my last memory of that game was me being decked out in all the best stuff so this one felt clunky.

Honestly, the lore is starting to grow on me. I've gotten to the point that I feel more agile in the game because of the upgrades I've achieved and found and the boss fights are tough but engaging.

Funny thing is, apparently people complained that the game was too difficult so Team Cherry released a patch to make the game easier. Supposedly, when certain things hit you, taken off two hearts instead of one is too difficult for people.
I've refused to download the patch, and sure there are times when I think the game is being cheap or ridiculous, but I keep at it and when I beat those bosses it just makes the victory that much more worth it.

Seriously, go get these games. Hollow Knight is selling for 15$ on steam and Silkson for 20$. I got Hollow knight on steam but decided to go switch for silksong. No regrets, I played it for hours on the flight across the Atlantic.

"New" Sonic the Hedgehog game - Sonic Superstars
Is this a new game or a remastering or remake of one of the originals?

I have to admit, the sprite animation in the trailer does look enticing.

Cult of the Lamb
This is being touted as Animal Crossing with weapons and blood. I have to admit, it sounds relatively interesting.

Maybe a cross between animal crossing for the city building and citizen animal folk managing but with the fighting of binding of isaac.

Going to be out for pretty much everything it looks like.

Check out the interview, it's pretty interesting.

Also if you get the chance, go buy the game, it's actually a lot of fun. Buy Days of Purgatory on Steam

Epic Games Store price experiment not as successful as originally thought
That's a hell of a title for an article but hear me out.

There's a lot to digest here but here are some snippets from an Arstechnica article about the subject.

The Epic Games Store's two-year-plus experiment in reduced platform fees provides plenty of evidence on this score. Just look at any of the dozens of games available on both the EGS (where Epic charges publishers a 12 percent fee) and Steam (where Valve charges a 30 percent standard fee).

In almost every case, those games will be offered at the same base price. Instead of passing on the savings, the publishers just pocket the 18 percentage-point difference between the EGS cut and the Steam cut. The only real exceptions come when a store is having a temporary sale, after which the games revert to identical prevailing pricing standards in almost every case.

One of the original idea behind Epic's lower "commission" fee on games was that the savings would be passed on to customers, but 2 years in and that isn't the case. Sidenote, would this be considered a kind of trickle down economics?

There's a bit on price parity and how Steam's policies are breaking things, but this is standard practice in an open market. I remember when Vikie was working at Expedia it was the same thing. If she found her "clients" were advertising lower prices on any competitors it was a big deal. They had to have the same or better pricing on Expedia for the same amount of time.

The article is an interesting read if you have 10 minutes.

Metro Last Light Redux available for free on epic
I don't know how many people have the epic launcher - I installed it to get Starwars battlefront but I have a lot of games from the store in there. If you didn't know, Epic gives away free games every week, I think they can do that thanks to all that sweet sweet Fortnite dollary doos.

At any rater, these games aren't always indie games. Sometimes it's the big triple A titles like Starwars Battlefront as I mentioned before. This week, we've got Metro Last Light Redux.

Seriously, all it takes is an epic account which is free to create and then the game is yours forever. Go, do it. Get that account made.

Speaking of Battlefront, it was a 90gig download which was took less time to play, decide it was a terrible game and uninstall it compared to how long it took to download. Seriously, a piece of garbage.

Just beat Cat quest
I'm going through my steam library trying to clear it out and have been going through games 1 by 1 when I'm not playing TitanFall 2 (Go pick up titanfall 2 if anything for the single player though the multiplayer is awesome as well).

I picked up Cat Quest a while ago and started playing it yesterday. If you look at the steam page, there are tons of reviews on how great it is. It's aesthetically pleasing for the most part with cute graphics. It's part metroidvania and part souls game.

I had to turn off the music after about an hour though as there seem to only be 3 or 4 songs, each playing on a loop when certain things happen.
It can be a relatively short game too, since I was doing the mini quests and after my 10th or so I realized that the entire game was a fetch quest.

  • Go here

  • get this thing

  • oh shit someone stole it

  • chase them to another location and kill them

  • Or someone is missing

  • go there to find them

  • oh shit it's monsters

  • kill them quick

  • now head back to town

Seriously, even the main missions are like that.

I had to force myself to finish it, and only because the main quest is so short I figured I might as well.

The AI for the monsters varies depending on the mob, but all in all pretty pattern based and pretty simple to figure out.

I've uninstalled it, not planning on playing it again, but I could suggest it if you have an afternoon to burn and it's on super sale for a couple bucks.

Aether

For anyone who liked Firefly and wants to get punched right in the feels, check out this steampunk inspired sci fi movie: Aether the rise of Specter.

Too bad it's only going to be one movie and not a series, but hey, you never know right?

Valiant Hearts: The Great War
A saw this through Jontron's post on Facebook. He makes some pretty entertaining videos, but the game play, artwork and story was what really caught my interest.

The trailer is so touching when you think that all the stories in the game are based on actual people and the letters they wrote. Add a k9 friend to the mix and you have a real tear jerker.

Jontron is pretty funny.

I was sad to see that the game was for Xbone and PS4, but what's this?! It's also on Steam!

Evaluate your Steam library
I found an interesting website for determining certain things about your steam library. Total value, time spent on steam, average cost per time spent. All pretty interesting. I know my library is technically worth $2700 but i did not spend anywhere near that amount being the miser I am.

Bioshock Infinite on sale on Steam
Just letting everyone know, if you don't have Bioshock Infinite or know someone who doesn't have it, the game is currently 75%. That brings the grand total to $7.49.

Bioshock Infinite on sale on Steam

I think it's totally worth the price. I've already picked it up. I'm also thinking I need a gaming desktop at this point. While my Macbook Pro is more than sufficient, I feel the need for something a little stronger that I can upgrade as well.

Go get payday, like RIGHT NOW!
It's $1.99 on steam and it's a fps co-op multiplayer game. The entire game is about robbing banks or jewellery stores or whatever. And for such little cost, how could you say no?!

Not convinced? check out the video below.

Valve Announces foray into Operating Systems with SteamOS
We all kinda knew it was coming, it was rumoured since Microsoft announced it's plans to create an app store and there was word of services like steam being blocked by MS.

Constantly evolving

Worldwide
Steam is in 185 countries and has been translated into 25 languages. As a truly global platform, Steam, and now SteamOS, brings entertainment to an audience without borders.

The whole thing seems pretty interesting and kinda promising, built on Linux even. Makes me wonder what kind of impact this is going to have on Microsoft and Windows. Windows is pretty well entrenched in the corporate environment but their position in the living room is constantly under attack by Apple, Google, Sony and even a bit by Nintendo. I don't want to sound like an end of the world kind of person but I wonder how much this will damage Microsoft.

Dying to see what it'll look like.
