Apple VR / AR headsetat 14:00 - 6th, June 2023Apple finally throws its hat in the ring to take on Meta directly.
There are a lot of nice features in this over the Metaverse and the quest, but I think it's biggest issue is that it's not geared at games. Why would I wear this to run my computer and programs when I can just use the screen of my device. And personally, while the theater aspect of it seems cool and all, I don't see myself watching a movie for hours on end and just sitting there on the couch with a head set on. I have enough trouble doing this for gaming on the quest. Now, throw me into beatsaber for a couple of hours, no problem at all. One thing that I don't understand is they say it's self contained, but everyone has a wire going into their pocket. I wonder if it needs an iphone or if maybe that's the battery. By the way, price tag of 3500US. This screams apple marketing over any real substance considering there are top of the line VR headsets that cost less than this and have more sensors and capabilities. Similar posts

Definitely too expensive for me. I've been considering the Quest, but have a hard time with the forced facebook integration. ![]() News comment 3 | User comment 4939 | 14:15 - 8th, Jun 2023 I have a friend here who's big into VR and flight sims. He had the original quest, upgraded to the quest 2 then upgraded to some top of the line head set I've never heard of but is used for industry or military or something. He gave me his quest CT, it's neat but not as revolutionary as people were making it out to be.
The quest 2 and quest go had the cameras in the front that would display what would be in front of the person when games were paused so you could see around you which ultimately led to the AR we see today. A lot of what Apple did, Meta already has, and the whole walled garden or whatever is still just the metaverse. People didn't buy into the metaverse but I think that has a lot to do with Facebook and zuckerberg more than the technology itself. A lot of it is really cool, but does it beat a webcam on a laptop or monitor? no. Is is necessary for meetings and such? no. Jay used his quest for watching movies and said it's nice cause you don't disturb anyone else while in bed and they're sleeping, but a tv and headphones does the same. Really, I don't get it, but I'm becoming more and more of a Luddite. ![]() News comment 4 | User comment 4939 | 14:26 - 8th, Jun 2023 As for the motion sickness, there are two relatively easy fixes.
In this VR rollercoaster simulator they give the option to place a reticule on front of the cart, something the eyes can focus on if you start getting sick, and boy did i get sick with that one. But the reticule helped a bit. Another problem was in games where you can walk around using the thumbstick, and there's full motion like in a regular game, that causes all sorts of issues with the inner ear. Apparently putting something like the shape on a nose in the middle of the screen will help, but I found the biggest help was physically sitting down in real life. I wasn't able to play those games until I sat down.

it's a neat concept, I'm not totally against it, although am a bit concerned of Apple locking it down too much which might discourage developers from experimenting. At least the Oculus ran on a Windows PC without a custom OS. I'm a bit skeptical as well about their claim to low latency, I guess it'll have to wait until I try it. Used the Oculus for 5 minutes and I felt sick.
