Sid Meier's Railroads: a brief review

at 10:22 - 8th, November 2012
I saw news that this was released for Mac, and since I'm not on a Mac that can play this I thought I'd get it for PC in the mean time.

I cannot stress how much I love this game. It's like have a toy train set, something I've always wanted. You can play alone, feels like having a table top train set, play against up to 3 computer players, great fun because it can be quite challenging, or best of all play 3 friends. I'm dying to play this on a LAN with some people.

When playing against someone, be it AI or people, the ultimate goal is to buyout your opponents. But let me take a step back and say at its core Sid Meier's railroads is a resource management game. That is to say get resource 1 from city A, then bring resource 2 to city B and so on and so on.

What makes this more interesting, aside from watching the trains take on a life of their own, is that let's say you're taking cattle from a farm into the city and turning it into meat. The meat needs to be taken to another city but more importantly you can buy any industry that is in a city. But to buy the industry you have to start an auction. This adds a whole monopoly aspect to the game. It's brilliant!

On top of that, the city you start in can be a Podunk town in the middle of nowhere but once your trains start bringing in and taking out goods the city grows, and when that happens the city will demand more and different goods. This is all represented in the game too. So in 1830 you can start with a town of 50 people and by 1900 that town can be a thriving metropolis that fills the screen.

It's an absolutely fantastic game that will run on almost any computer.

Minimum PC System Requirements
Operating System: Windows 2000/XP
Processor: Pentium 4 1.4 GHz or AMD Athlon equivalent
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Hard Disk Space: 2 GB Free
Video: DirectX 9.0c-compatible 64 MB video card with hardware pixel & vertex shaders
Sound: DirectX 7-compatible sound card or higher
DirectX: DirectX version 9.0c (included) or higher

Minimum Mac System Requirements
MAC OS X 10.6.8
CPU TYPE Intel Mac Only
VIDEO (ATI) ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT
VIDEO (INTEL) Intel HD Graphics *

Even with these small requirements the game looks great, not hyper realistic but still great. Almost charming actually.

And I just found out you can add custom maps to the game:

My final word on this game is that if you're a fan of strategy games, resource management games, railroads in general or building games ala simcity, this game is for you. I highly recommend it. If you're looking for a fun time waster, since most games at my skill level can be finished in about an hour against AI, this game is for you.

So go out and get it.
