I do not mind Nintendo opening their base to a broader audience or being innovative but they are also loosing any sort of mature identity they had left. They were even quoted recently that all their games from now on will be focusing on it being easi

Incredible use of minecraft

Mincraft (wiki page), for those that don't know, is a 'game' of exploration and building. Curt had a great little post on his site about it here.

A quote from the page on Curt's site:
It’s not a browser game anymore (though you can play the old browser version for free on the site).

I managed to get some time in before it ceased to be free to play. It’s kind of hard to describe, but I’ll try. It’s a game with no real goal, kind of like The Sims. The twist, of course, is that you need to survive, as once night falls, things become suddenly more dangerous. Furthermore, it’s got more of a focus on exploration and crafting. In that vein, it’s kind of like a Robinson Crusoe kind of game where you have to find all your resources and build all your tools.

The game in it’s current state is very interesting and I haven’t been bored by it yet, but I could see how it could get boring, particularly if you don’t care to explore much, or don’t like building things, or are looking for an existing plotline.

It also has strong potential for unique player experiences, much like Dwarf Fortress or Rogue, only it doesn’t have the unintelligible interface of the former, and it it encourages more creativity on the player’s part than the latter.

I like the idea and tried to get my hands on it but didn't spend much time trying.
This video just takes the whole thing to a new level though.

This guy built an ALU (arithmetic logic unit / basic calculator processor) inside minecraft.

He even goes on to say he could probably build a compiler, insane!
a game that allows you to build a compiler so that you can build other programs...

right now it's in it's most basic form, so it's a little slow but at least it's 16 bit.

NERD!!! Just kidding. That's actually really impressive, and it really shows how much one can truly do in a sandbox environment.

His voice reminds me of Milton from Office Space, though. ;)

Oh, and Minecraft is available for all platforms as it's just a Java app. I'm pretty sure the Windows exe is little more than a wrapper.

i was playing a bit last night and dug out the underneath of an entire mountain hoping that the mountain would cave in once i cut the last line to solid ground. unfortunately no.

then i took a trip to the very bottom of my lake.

the free version of the 'game' is missing life
flowers are a nice touch but some fish or land animals would be nice

There are animals in the alpha, which you can kill for food and other supplies. There are still no real physics to speak of, however. You can make floating platforms and such, still.

i did find a certain rock in the classic that actually would lower itself once you broke what was underneath, but wouldn't work for my plan of avalanche.

i'm sure if i tried i could find a way though
