The Computer problems persist

at 22:57 - 14th, September 2010
What a bad computer day for me. it actually started yesterday when i was adding all my music back to my itunes library which I had upgraded to itunes 10. I thought itunes 10 was a nice new slick version with even more crap i won't be using.
computer started analyzing the music, which i thought was weird because i was using the same library as before. Even strager was the fact that it was taking forever to analyze a few songs.

Now i know I'm a techno guy and my music can be 3 hours for one file, but still i have closed to 40 gigs of alternative and random other stuff on there and it was getting stuck on the other stuff.

Then itunes beach balled. oh the dreaded fucking beachball. itunes was completely unresponsive, which is impressive for a memory protected advanced OS like OS 10.6. i couldn't even move the fucking window.force quit and then the hard drive disappeared.i didn't think anything of it yesterday, i get back home today and the past 4 hours have been trying to tackle the bloody thing which won't mount, can't be scanned, doesn't let any of my hard drive tools (diskutility, techtool and diskwarrior) even touch them.
every time i plug the fucker into my mac it tells me, cannot be read, and asks if i want to ignore, eject or initialize the thing.

not happy. all my apps were backed up onto that blasted thing.

meanwhile i'm trying to install os9 on my quicksilver, so i can play some old school games. nope, the computer gods hate me right now. i was able to download os9 and all of it's patches (if anyone wants them let me know), burn to a cd, install that on a hard drive on y sawtooth (400mhz) mac, i figured the quicksilver would just pick up the hard drive and boot from the os if I plugged it in. nope, and i have no fucking clue why. i may just resort to reinstalling os 10 on top of that and playing games through classic, far from what i hoped to do but if it works, it works.

I fear i lost my hard drive though. this bugs the hell out of me...

this has happened to me before.. if you think your HD is dead, you might be able to recover some of it.. hope there wasnt too much on there

install OSX to an external hd, then boot from that. you can then do a disk dump of your laptop's HD to a dmg file on your external HD, you can then scan that file and try and recover stuff ..

Fun times.
Just got a new laptop. It's lovely lovely. And I mean lovely. The screen is gorgeous.

It's an Acer. Last one in the store.

figured it out. the quicksilver only supports OS9.2 and up. I was installing 9.0.

I was able to figure it out through a spec sheet of the cpu upgrade that's in the mac.

so, installed 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 on the sawtooth and then swapped the HDD into the 1ghz machine.

now it boots to the desktop and crashes before anything loads but if i turn off extensions it boots fine.

admittedly, the installer for 9.2 gave 2 error when upgrading the OS though. just need to figure out which extensions it is that's causing problems.

Awww, good ol' Mac OS9 and its extensions.

So, to recap, Hard drive is functional but i'm still worried about it. Mac OS9 works on the quicksilver but has extension problems.

much better than yesterday i think :)

Alex,
Have you tried trowing your hard drive on the floor and kicking it a couple of times?
It always worked for me.
True story.

i'm so happy with os 9
i installed my nvidia drivers, updated to 9.2.2 and now everything is working great.

loaded up oni, max payne, master of orion, civ and civ 2 tonight just for a quick test. it's blinding fast.
os x really was not designed for those g4's...

finally found a browser for os9 that doesn't suck. Classilla is built on the mozilla engine. so it's a mix between firefox and netscape navigator that is almost up to html5 compliance!

awesome.
