Alex Alex
News comment 2 | User comment 4968 | 13:38 - 27th, Jan 2010

finally, specs

.5 inches thin, 1.5 pounds -- 9.7 inch IPS display
Full capacitive multitouch
powered by the 1GHz Apple A4 chip. <- is that the same chip by arm?
Available in 16GB, 32, 64
802.11n and bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

10 hour running - 1 month stand by (san francisco to tokyo while watching movies without recharge)

doesn't look like multitasking (runs iphone os)

works with all the old iphone/touch apps, just upscales them

so far, it's just an oversized ipod, with a nice keyboard

havent heard anything yet for:
- will it have 3g data
- its price
- can you run more than one app at the same time

oh my god, list of accessories:
a dock to make it stand up, charge and look like a picture frame
a dock with a keyboard, stand up charge and look like a super thing touch screen computer.

ipad with dock

for 500 bucks, if bluetooth mice might work with it, maybe i could get one as a cheapy computer
only problem is it runs the iphone os

with the keyboard, it's essentially an apple netbook

and since it's unlocked, data not required, you'll be able to jailbreak it and run multiple apps

At least they didn't go for the 1000$+ price point, 500 isn't too bad a price. One thing i'm wondering is if it's able to run flash.

News comment 19 | User comment 1363 | 14:50 - 27th, Jan 2010

i doubt it

Alex Alex
News comment 20 | User comment 4968 | 14:51 - 27th, Jan 2010

flash yes, as apps are coded to use flash sometimes, like the youtube channel
but i think they want to move away from it and stick more towards the html5 standard of video tags in html.
youtube is already in beta for that

Alex Alex
News comment 21 | User comment 4968 | 14:53 - 27th, Jan 2010

flash in safari, no, and i think it's more of a licensing issue at this point since they're using safari which by default has flash built in.

jobs had said that flash was too intensive for the older ipod touch and iphone. but with a 1ghz arm a4 cpu in there it should be more than enough. and if anything they can use the ssmd as virtual memory, should be almost as fast a ram

Actualy it looks like it's not an ARM. Apple picked up a microprocessor company and made it's own chip. I think what you were thinking of was the A8 Cortex.

Alex Alex
News comment 23 | User comment 4968 | 15:16 - 27th, Jan 2010

apple owns part of arm, they have for a long time if i'm not mistaken

Alex Alex

oh, my bad. looks like it was P A semi not arm, though i think they do own part of ARM

js js
News comment 25 | User comment 1052 | 15:26 - 27th, Jan 2010

Possible, might still be an Arm design, but i can't find anything on the A4 architecture in wikipedia.

Not even sure if there are USB ports on it. Found an article fo a dongle that connects to the dock connector to give you a USB port or SD card reader. That is a very bad design choice if true. Really wish they just had a decent spec list available in one place.

js js
News comment 31 | User comment 1052 | 16:49 - 27th, Jan 2010

Thanks, wasn't able to find it earlier. Can't understand why they didn't put a USB port in. Unless they are a bit greedy and want to make money on the dongle. Even a mini or micro usb port would have been fine.

Alex Alex
News comment 32 | User comment 4968 | 16:59 - 27th, Jan 2010

it's apple, of course they're greedy

on top of that, everyone who uses the connector on one of their accessories has to pay apple royalties

A big resounding "Meh" from me. I was hoping for it to be a lot closer to an actual tablet PC. I already have an iPhone, I don't need one that just happens to be bigger.

The no Flash thing is a pain but acceptable on the iPhone cause it's a phone. If I'm going to use this thing as a replacement for my netbook, then it needs to do what my netbook does, and that includes Flash. I'll bet the real reason is so that people can't stream video over Hulu and instead have to pay Apple for TV or movies that they want to watch. It's a monopoly thing.

$500 is a great price for a full-featured tablet PC. It's far too much for a giant-sized iPhone. If anything, it has LESS features (no camera, have to pay extra for 3G). For that money, you'd be much better getting an Eee PC.

I've always wondered if maybe Steve Jobs is pissed that adobe pushed quicktime out of online video. I'm so happy it did, because i hated itunes and apple kept shoving it down my throat to view quicktime videos.
