Sounds good to me. Jay coming here before hand and we\'ll probably head out from here. Think it\'ll be enough time for eating though?

Site Issues and Updates

at 0:00 - 30th, April 2009
This is the post for complaints, suggestions and comments. inside I will list off the things i need to do and say when they are complete.
Moved chat to a "sub-window" - people were using it less and less and it took up to much space
google calendars have been removed. - google javascript has so many problems that during testing it was screwing up chat.
added tags.
the_boys and the_girls can only be seen by those sexes.
added a way to make news posts sticky - if abused alex will delete.

Still needs fixing/implemented
Posting news still has issues, works and then does not work. also incorrectly incrementing the ids of the news.
found the problem, the quotes ' " don't get submitted properly. need to look into this old problem.

move stickies over to the right, move a small version of chat to where stickies are now, get rid of art completely from main page.
find a way to get a random art on main page. maybe in the side bar?

clean up the art, websites and general portfolio section.
fix images for news posts. find out if they're portrait or landscape and scale accordingly.
create 'thumbnails' of images with link to image in new window.
change image name to reflect who updates it and when. ex. alex-20090317121622.jpg
finish blogs and game opinions.
get tags working on main page.
make a page to view all posts depending on tag clicked
implement new calendar.
implement group news posts.
add "forgot password" and "contact webmaster"
add rules to stickies
also, the side bar and stickies, have to rework the privs because right now they're completely screwed when displaying non public posts.
more to come.

add the group to post options in news posts for people who are in group.
add last viewing to user info and main page 'title=...'

Hey Alex.. I'm learning to live with the site but every time you hit a button like home, stats personal and so on .. you lose the chat and have to reload it. Mighty annoying dear. How can we get around that? I can't chat and post as I did before. I like the automatic refresh option though. I miss being able to chat and post at the same time. I do like the layout though of the chat box. Easier to follow.

alright, the chat is staying put for now. i was playing with it in different place and it just doesn't fit anywhere.
if anything i can put it in it's own window if you want.

No no, honey, we can't compliment him, then he'll expect it. I've spent years trying to whittle Alex's overgrown ego down to a manageable size, we can't destroying years of work now. ;)

But yeah, the issues I was talking about for the IE optimization are clearly displayed in a couple screenshots I took, gimme a sec tyo upload and post them in here.

Wow, a perfect example of how this site needs some work, i can't find anywhere on here to upload images, and I know i'm supposed to be able to. I'm almost tempted to make a new layout for you if I had the time. Your coding is solid for the most part and better than anything I could puzzle out, certainly. But your layout and navigation scheme is really hard to follow.

John John
News comment 13 | User comment 376 | 11:02 - 18th, Mar 2009

Full-screened, even in IE, the fulle view for the posts, and the comment boxes look great and work well, but the core navigation scheme of the site seems very convoluted.

What would do you think of integrating the char window where the sticky section is, you know so we can se the 2-3 last post so we kind of know what is the current conversation about withou haveing to go to the process of opening the chat window

Alex Alex
News comment 19 | User comment 4957 | 11:16 - 18th, Mar 2009

interesting idea.
and t be honest didn't think of just 2-3 lines. i was trying to do that with the whole bloody chat.

thanks babe, great idea

I think that there is just too much spacind for your artwork on top, It doesnt make me want to scrool down to see the rest of it. They also seem to be floating into thin air. It feel like it is missing some finish.

So basically what I recommend is having your recent artwork line up on top of one another on the left and having the chat window on the right side.

I also wish that you would bring back that concept you had on you original website where your Yes this big section would have a backgroung of a random artwork you made. It was a great idea. brought some mouvement and color to your website.

nicely done johnny. and something i'm definitely going to do with images here.

John John
News comment 26 | User comment 376 | 11:43 - 18th, Mar 2009

That site works fine:

It shows up fine in IE6. But this exactly is why you need to have an older PC running Windows XP and IE6 on it, simply for testing purposes. From a business standpoint, many companies are still constrained to using IE6 and you would benefit from your site working and looking good in those setups. Like T always said, your site needs to be scalable and compatible.

John John
News comment 27 | User comment 376 | 11:44 - 18th, Mar 2009

Oh, the thumbnail thing? They taught us that in web-tech, remember? Load the whole image and contrain it's size with parameters, that way it's already loaded for when someone clicks on it.

Alex Alex
News comment 28 | User comment 4957 | 11:57 - 18th, Mar 2009

hehe, that's if the image isn't huge. otherwise slows down the site and heavy on bandwidth.

personally when i add to the upload script i'll be resizing images as well, not just using the same image in two places.

portail looks like it's supposed to (eww), thanks johnny

John John
News comment 30 | User comment 376 | 12:21 - 18th, Mar 2009

Follow up with him, you'd be amazed how many businesses out there still use IE6

Curt Curt
News comment 31 | User comment 281 | 13:17 - 18th, Mar 2009

Yeah, as much as it blows, IE6 is still a requirement. This is part of the reason that things like CSS3 haven't really seen much use.

And John, that's a VERY bad way to thumbnail. Very faux-pas. ;)

New problems, now. The front page looks much better without all the art links, which is great. And the chat thing on the front page makes it more noticeable, but you can't actually type in the box and post to the chat. But here's the big problem:

The menu is blocking everything, so even if there's just something i need to click on to post to the chat from the main page, it's hidden so i can't tell it's there.

Also, everything in this post is duplicate. I can see the post text, then all the comments as normal, the box I'm typing in, and then immediately after it, everything all over again.

Curt Curt
News comment 35 | User comment 281 | 9:51 - 19th, Mar 2009

Actually, now that you mention it, I'm seeing the duplicate post thing as well, only it's on Firefox 3 in Vista, and not IE.

Alex Alex
News comment 40 | User comment 4957 | 17:52 - 21st, Mar 2009

no, small intentionally, but can you take a screenshot, supposed to be smaller than normal maybe ie does it even smaller than it's supposed to be.

i've noticed this for a while.. im on firefox on OSX, but same thing for Windows

but this site is *really* slow .. like I go to open to chat, and it takes 10-15 seconds to load.. when I want to go post a news item it takes even longer so I usually don't bother .. and the underline ads are super annoying .. i don't know anything about webdesign, but the old site was *much* faster.. and I am definitely discouraged from posting on here

Alex Alex
News comment 42 | User comment 4957 | 12:51 - 25th, Apr 2009

i'm doing stuff on the server recently that's been cpu intensive. but you raise an interesting point for me switching the server over to the bigger stronger powermac

but i'm actually thinking about getting myself a mini and running that as a server.

the ads, in almost every form will be gone, i guarantee you that

they don't make money and they just clutter things up.

Alex Alex
News comment 43 | User comment 4957 | 15:39 - 29th, Apr 2009

tags are working, kinda.
i need to find a better way to deal with the tags when people post a news topic, we're getting far too many tags with subtle differences.
ex. movie and movies. or trailer and trailered. or mario and mario bros.

i've made a page that you can view news posts by tag, also i've added a tags section in the sidebar, use it to your hearts content.

and finally, no more calendar. we just weren't using it, and despite me trying to find use for it, just couldn't come up with a good reason to keep it. So, in its place i've put a random quote from the site. just a little fun reminder type thing i thought people might enjoy.

oh, and in the process of removing all the ads. stupid stupid ads.

Curt Curt
News comment 44 | User comment 281 | 15:50 - 29th, Apr 2009

Tags: When people are entering their tags, have it auto-complete with whatever they're entering. So if they type trail, it picks trailers. This won't completely prevent duplication, but it'll help.

Calendar: I found it to be a lot handier to just plug in a Google Calendar, that way it's shared outside of the context of the site, and the site just displays the events themselves. Of course, if nobody wants to use a shared calendar, then this won't fix that either.

Alex Alex
News comment 45 | User comment 4957 | 15:54 - 29th, Apr 2009

no one even uses the google accounts i created :(

so forget the googlecalende, and google code is so dirty. checking the dom inspector for my site i get a lot of errors, but tons of google code errors.

the autocomplete is something i'm working. found a couple that do single entry and i have a couple that do multiple entry. the ones that do single have db support, a need, the ones that do multiple don't, and my java is REALLY bad, so the multiple are a little more difficult for me.

i'll get it eventually though.
