British Sales Charts - now with US sales - actual sales

In a rare act of charity, British sales outfit ChartTrack have teamed up with retailer GAME to provide total lifetime sales figures (ie all sales, not just GAME sales) for this generation of hardware.

And GUESS WHAT? The Wii is on top. Followed by the 360. Followed by the PS3. Shocking, surprising, the works, we know, we know. The figures, as of January 3 2009, are:

Wii - 4.9 million
360 - 3.2 million
PS3 - 1.9 million

Also provided were handheld sales figures.

DS - 8.8 million
PSP - 3.2 million

people think that the 360 is doing ok and that the ps3 is doing well. i don't think the same. the 360 is out longer and thus show have a more saturated market by now, while the ps3 is new and shiny and still can't sell well.

your takes?
update
prediction, not actual sales:
Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter just put out his US sales estimates for December, predicting a total domination for Nintendo as Wii sells 3.25 million units for the month.

Xbox 360 enjoyed a margin of almost 2:1 over PlayStation 3 with an estimated 1.35 million consoles sold to Sony's 750.000.
However, the clear winner was Nintendo as Pachter predicts DS sold 2.6 million making total Nintendo unit sales 5.8 million.
Yesterday, another research company EEDAR, predicted that Nintendo saved Christmas with Wii selling 3.2 million units and DS 3 million.

update
and the actual ndp numbers:

Nintendo DS 3.04 million
Wii 2.15 million
Xbox 360 1.44 million
PlayStation Portable 1.02 million
PlayStation 3 726K
PlayStation 2 410K

software sales - and this is somewhat surprising but when you thinking about it it really isn't
WII PLAY W/ REMOTE - NINTENDO OF AMERICA - 1.46 million
360 CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR - ACTIVISION BLIZZARD - 1.33 million
WII FIT W/ BALANCE BOARD - NINTENDO OF AMERICA - 999K

wiiplay outselling call of duty world at war for the 360. makes sense when it comes with a wiimote though.

Apparently, Sony may have lost 1.1 billion US$ last year.

Well the Wii is no surprise. Still selling like hot cakes, nobody can figure out why yet. I wouldn't say the 360 is doing just ok. It's doing really well and they are ever so slowly breaking the japanese stigma against US companies.

Sony PS3 is a flop. And by flop this is a Dreamcast type of flop. System with great potential that just has a company making bad decisions.

However your talking about a chart tracker and just one retailer. So really all these numbers mean...nothing lol Thats the joy of statistics. I look at it this way. Enjoy what you like. If you compare numbers your probably trying to erect your virtual penis for whichever you deem your favorite.

@js: not may have, they did. first loss in something like 14 years and only second loss since they opened in 1958 or some such thing.

@carl: the fan boy in me still likes comparing the numbers, though it's more of a watching the great tower fall type of thing now.

Good sales numbers except for Sony. Sony is actually quite embarassing right now. Like to not have a few top games is just sad. They need to lower the price and take a hit to start getting consoles in peoples homes. Kinda tired of this PS3 is a home media center. It does an excellent job at it. I ironically get more versatility with my Windows Media Server through my PS3 then my 360 (Go figure). Literally I stream wireless anime and there is no lag.

The Wii Play is kind of loaded since you buy it for the remote and oh it comes with a game. I don't think those should particularly count.

Considering the Wii install base I am not surprised by the numbers. I will be interested to see the longevity among core audience as right now everyone is saying it collects dust.

I think once NXE is more prevalent on the system and that we get the live family time package that it will open up two new markets which will hopefully catch on. But I don't think they need to change their recipe this generation as they have made lots of progress.

I give Sony till summer to drop their prices. If they cannot then I suggest they pack up and leave to other pastures. It's great to gloat about high tech you are. But in a financial crisis you cannot lower your price for the average joe who are the biggest demographic of gamers then your committing corporate suicide.

I think a console should primarily be a gaming machine. If they can tack on interesting stuff after then thats cool but they should be foremost a gaming platform.

well everyone is saying it'll drop to 299 soon, so it's completely possible that we get a cheaper ps3 soon.

Yeah but every time they speculate a cheaper console, Sony discontinues said SKU and releases an improved SKU which remains the same price.

they'll eventally have to lower the price. besides, aren't consoles sales supposed to lose money but make it back on licensing?

Supposed to. But the cell processor and blu ray combination make it that the PS3 loses a fuck ton per console compared to the other two. I find it rather funny that Microsoft was able to extend the 360 warranty to replace red ringed consoles at billion dollar cost and still come out making a profit while PS3 is stubborn and are just losing money regardless.

thats the wonderful thing about accounting my friend. just because they made a profit doesn't mean they billed the repairs to the xbox division. anyway, it is a little funny and i'm sure a lot of people forgot about the rrod when ms said they were making a profit.

MS never said they were making a profit back then. They said in fact that they were willing to take the hit and delay making profits as it was their fuck up. Pretty stand up if you ask me.

And every division has to be accountable for their expenses. You can't (or shouldn't) declare expenses where they don't belong. I think however not having knowledge of their accounting and operations and basing your perception as fact is winning you another fanboy e-penis award. Congrats lol
